The Kanas City Chiefs were counting on Xavier Worthy to play a bigger role this season. But those plans were derailed on Friday night.
The promising wide receiver suffered a dislocated shoulder in a collision with teammate Travis Kelce in the first quarter of Kansas City’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, Brazil, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.
The “most likely option” is that Worthy will wear a brace on his shoulder and return at some point this season.
There’s no timetable as to when that could be, though. The 2024 first-round pick will undergo more testing. Surgery is still on the table.
Worthy is also getting a second opinion on the injury.
During his rookie season Worthy led all Chiefs receivers with 59 catches, 638 yards and six touchdowns. He also thrived during the playoffs where the wideout hauled in 19 catches for 287 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
The Chiefs are already thin at the wide receiver position with Rashee Rice suspended for the first six games, and losing Worthy for any period of time would only add more problems.
