Mets add bullpen help, sign relief pitcher formerly with Reds

Mets agree to minor league deal with left-handed reliever

The New York Mets have run into an interesting blockade in their pitching rotation this week. While they continue to fight for their first division title since 2015, a once-upon-a-time Cy Young Award candidate, Kodai Senga, was demoted to Triple-A.

New York also called up their No. 5 prospect, pitcher Brandon Sproat, to the major leagues while adding veteran bullpen pitcher Wander Suero as well.

As the Mets aim to clinch a series win over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, they bolstered their roster by adding a former Reds reliever.

Mets sign left-handed reliever Joe La Sorsa

Before their game on Saturday, the New York Mets signed left-handed bullpen pitcher Joe La Sorsa. The 27-year-old elected free agency after getting designated for assignment by the Cincinnati Reds on Sept. 2.

La Sorsa has made five appearances in the major leagues this season, finishing with a 10.80 ERA, 2.25 WHIP, and striking out two in 6.2 innings.

Most of the lefty’s success this season has come in Triple-A Louisville. In 45 games for the Bats, La Sorsa has a 2.82 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, with 41 strikeouts in 44.2 innings. He will report to Triple-A Syracuse before the Mets potentially call up the pitcher from Mount Kisco, New York.

The Mets continue their push for the NL East title, though the Philadelphia Phillies hold a six-game lead. With just under a month left in the regular season, New York may have to settle for a Wild Card spot, where they currently hold a four-game cushion.
