Uncertainty Grows Over Manchester United Goalkeeper’s Future

Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation has taken another dramatic twist as tensions continue to rise between head coach Ruben Amorim and first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana. Although reports suggest that Amorim never explicitly demanded Onana’s removal from the squad, sources close to the club have revealed that several key incidents have caused a gradual breakdown in their working relationship. Onana, who endured a mixed first season at Old Trafford, reportedly shocked the club’s hierarchy by requesting a new contract despite the fact that his current deal already includes a 25% wage reduction following United’s failure to qualify for the Champions League. The request is said to have struck a nerve with Amorim, who is understood to be building a new culture of accountability and meritocracy within the dressing room. In Amorim’s view, a player seeking improved terms after a season marked by inconsistency and defensive fragility sent the wrong message to the rest of the squad. This, coupled with an ill-timed pre-season injury that forced Onana to miss crucial preparation games, is said to have left a “lasting impression” on the manager. Amorim reportedly saw the situation as a red flag, raising questions about Onana’s long-term reliability both in terms of form and fitness.

The fallout from this strained relationship appears to have pushed Manchester United towards making a decisive move regarding their goalkeeping department. The club has now reportedly given Onana permission to explore other opportunities away from Old Trafford, with the Saudi Pro League emerging as the most likely destination should he depart. This stance reflects a willingness from both parties to find an amicable resolution rather than let tensions continue to simmer. At the same time, Amorim and United’s recruitment team have been proactive in their search for alternatives, with Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens identified as a prime target and already brought in to provide competition. The Belgian shot-stopper’s arrival, combined with the presence of Altay Bayindir, has significantly altered the goalkeeping hierarchy at the club. In a clear signal of intent, Amorim opted to start Bayindir and Lammens in United’s opening fixtures of the 2025-26 Premier League season, leaving Onana out of the squad entirely.

This decision has been viewed by many as a strong indicator that Amorim is ready to move forward without the Cameroonian international as part of his long-term project. While the club have not yet confirmed whether a transfer is imminent, the fact that Onana now finds himself third choice and out of favour strongly suggests that his time at Old Trafford is drawing to a close. For United, the move represents a chance to refresh their goalkeeping options and back a manager who has been tasked with rebuilding a squad capable of challenging for top honours once again. For Onana, a move to Saudi Arabia could provide both a lucrative contract and a fresh start away from the pressures of Premier League football. The coming weeks will likely prove decisive as Manchester United continue to reshape their squad and Amorim seeks to implement his vision of a more competitive and disciplined t
