Three Injured Mets Begin Rehab Assignments

The New York Mets will likely get some much-needed reinforcements, as three injured players begin their rehab assignments this week. Catcher Francisco Alvarez heads to Triple-A Syracuse, while outfielders Jesse Winker and Jose Siri will tune up with Single-A St. Lucie.

Alvarez’s original injury is both the most recent and least severe of the three. He is recovering from a sprain of the UCL in his right thumb, which he suffered earlier this month. Although he hasn’t been out long, it will require surgery in the offseason. However, Wednesday delivered a potential setback to Alvarez’s return. In his first rehab game with Syracuse, he was hit on his other hand by a pitch and had to leave the game. He was 1-for-2 in the game, a 6-1 loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, before that. It is unknown if or how long this new injury will keep Alvarez out. In 56 major league games this season, the 23-year-old backstop is slashing .265/.349/.438 with seven home runs, 24 RBI, and a 125 OPS+.

Winker has been limited to only 26 games so far in his second season (first full) with the Mets. He went on the injured list in early May with an oblique strain, causing him to miss two months. He returned briefly in July, only to be placed back on the IL after two games due to back inflammation. In his limited major league action this season, Winker is slashing .229/.309/.400 with one homer and 10 RBI.

Siri has only played 10 games in his first year with the Mets, suffering a fractured tibia in April that landed him on the 60-day IL. He didn’t do much in 20 big-league at-bats, going 1-for-20 (a double) with a single RBI. Both Winker and Siri were in Wednesday’s lineup for St. Lucie. Siri went 0-for-0 with a walk and a run scored. Winker went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before being removed for a pinch hitter. St. Lucie lost to Lakeland 3-1.
