Aaron Boone bumps fists with Jasson Domínguez after a game against the Royals.

The New York Yankees had a brutal series against the Boston Red Sox, but outside of that, over the past few weeks, they haven’t played as poorly as they were just a month or so ago.

Still, the Yankees sit in third place in the American League East, 5.5 games behind the first-place Toronto Blue Jays. At 7-3 over their last 10, if the Yankees continue to play this way heading into the last month of the season, there’s even a chance for them to win the division. However, that doesn’t change the fact that the Yankees haven’t played the type of baseball they were expected to when entering the season, and at some point, it has to fall on someone.

Many believe that could be Aaron Boone, including Christopher Kline of FanSided, who recently linked them to a change in the managerial position with former Miami Marlins coach Skip Schumaker.

“The Miami Marlins and Skip Schumaker parted ways after only two seasons together. He led them to 84 wins and a surprise postseason berth in 2023. Then Miami undercut the front office with Kim Ng’s firing and the team fell apart. It’s rather difficult to pinpoint exact managerial tendencies in today’s game, but Schumaker has proven that he can rally a group of underdogs to outperform expectations. Just imagine what he might do with a team of high-paid stars and the Yankees logo across his chest…

“His success in Miami made Schumaker the most sought-after managerial candidate of those currently in between jobs. He’s not the sexiest name, perhaps, but if Schumaker can lift the Marlins out of purgatoy, he can probably help cement the necessary vibe shift in New York after this miserable season,” Kline wrote .

Could the Yankees Look at Skip Schumaker?

Reports have indicated over the past few months that Schumaker may be interested in returning to Major League Baseball as a manager.

If the New York Yankees job opens up and they decide to move on from Boone, it’s safe to say that every manager on the market would be interested in coaching in New York.

Not only are the Yankees one of the best organizations in Major League Baseball history, if not the best, but New York City is an excellent place to live. The issue, for Schumaker and others who might want to coach for the Yankees, is whether the job will really be available.

According to Ken Rosenthal, it might be.

“You wonder where this is all going. What happens if they miss the playoffs? Unlikely, but what happens?” Rosenthal said .

“More likely, they could get knocked out early. That’s certainly a scenario we can envision happening. Does Aaron Boone come back? Does Brian Cashman come back? Or do they finally turn the page? All of this seemingly is in play,” Rosenthal added.

Could Aaron Boone Remain in New York?

There’s also a side of the story that suggests if the New York Yankees turn things around and win a World Series, everything would be more than fine.

It’s unfortunate that the Yankees are in the position they’re currently in, but the season is far from over. If the Yankees want their skipper to stay in town for a lot longer, they need to figure things out, which might not be as crazy as it sounds.
