President Donald Trump wished one of America’s most famous couples Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce good luck on their engagement.
Swift, a music superstar, and Kelce, a football player on the Kansas City Chiefs, announced their engagement in a joint Instagram post on Aug. 26. Trump was in a Cabinet meeting when the news broke and was asked for his response by a reporter.
“Well, I wish them a lot of luck. I think he’s a great player, a great guy. I think she’s a terrific person,” he said. “So, I wish them a lot of luck.”
Trump has been involved with sports often as president and saw Kelce play at the Super Bowl earlier this year when he became the first sitting president to attend the event. However, his history with Swift is more fraught, as he has repeatedly said he hates her. Here is what to know:
Trump goes from ‘I like her boyfriend’ to ‘I hate Taylor Swift’ in 2024
Before Swift made her voting intentions for the 2024 election public, Trump tried to win her over.
“I like her boyfriend, Travis, even though he may be a Liberal, and probably can’t stand me!” he said in Feb.
2024 ahead of the Chiefs’ win in the Super Bowl LVIII.
Later that year, Swift endorsed the Democratic nominee after the presidential debate between former Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump.
Harris had a historically short campaign after stepping in for former President Joe Biden following his disastrous debate with Trump earlier in the summer.
“(Harris) fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” Swift said in a post, which took a subtle jab at JD Vance’s viral comments about “childless cat ladies.” “I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”
Days later, Trump took to Truth Social to declare “I hate Taylor Swift,” though his campaign leaned into the clash by selling T-shirts with a similar design to the Taylor Swift Eras Tour merchandise, only with Trump’s face on it.
Trump also claimed in May 2025 that “she’s no longer HOT” since he said he hated her and said again he hated her earlier this month amid the American Eagle ad controversy with Sydney Sweeney.
Travis Kelce said Trump at Super Bowl was ‘a great honor’
Swift and Trump were likely the two highest-profile attendees at Super Bowl LIX, where the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Chiefs in a decisive win.
For Trump, it was the first of several high-profile sporting events he would attend in just seven months in office, and for Swift, it was her second Super Bowl as Kelce’s girlfriend.
Despite the president’s comments towards Swift over the past year, Kelce reacted to the news that Trump would be attending the game warmly, according to videos posted by multiple media outlets in February.
“That’s awesome. It’s a great honor,” he told reporters. “I think, you know, no matter who the president is, I know I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life, you know, and having the president there, you know, it’s the best country in the world. So, that’d be pretty cool.”
