The major Premier League star is close to signing despite Xabi Alonso’s interest
The Premier League has once again positioned itself as Real Madrid’s main competitor in the transfer market. Looking to reinforce his defense, Xabi Alonso had identified Bundesliga standout Piero Hincapié as a potential signing. However, the Ecuadorian center-back is now attracting strong interest from England.
According to Fabrizio Romano, several Premier League sides have placed Hincapié on their radar, with Tottenham already making contact to inquire about his situation. Sources at Defensa Central confirm that the defender has decided to leave Bayer Leverkusen, and with a release clause set at €60 million, his price is well within reach for top clubs.
Xabi Alonso had hoped to reunite with Hincapié at the Santiago Bernabéu, but Real Madrid’s board does not consider him part of their transfer plans. As a result, the coach may have to watch his former player take the next step in his career in England, further strengthening LaLiga’s great rival.
Hincapié, just 23 years old, has developed into one of Leverkusen’s most reliable players since his arrival from Club Atlético Talleres in 2021. Last season, he logged nearly 4,000 minutes across competitions, underlining his importance to the team. Alonso knows the defender well, having worked with him at Leverkusen, where he was key to maximizing Hincapié’s growth.
Despite being under contract until 2029, the player has already made clear his desire for a new challenge before the window closes. His mix of youth and experience makes him the type of defender Alonso would welcome at Madrid, but the club has remained firm: no move will be made.
For now, Tottenham lead the chase, though other Premier League clubs are expected to join the race soon. What is certain is that Hincapié’s next chapter will not involve a reunion with his former coach.
