The Utah Jazz are going to get trade calls for Lauri Markkanen

It Motivates Me" | Why Lauri Markkanen Should Be An NBA All-Star | Utah Jazz

In the latest Stein Line, Jake Fischer revealed some more details about the Jonathan Kuminga and Golden State Warriors contract mess. It wasn’t related to the Jazz directly, but it will in a roundabout way … eventually.

The line that stands out regarding Kuminga is this one:

The Warriors, furthermore, are known for their penchant to go big-game hunting, starting with their original pursuit of Durant … and carrying through to their February acquisition of Butler.

That said …
Even if the Warriors had Kuminga on their books making a tradeable salary north of $20 million, it would still be very challenging for Golden State to assemble a trade offer palatable to the Lakers that could match James’ $52.6 million salary without gutting their roster.

We know that the Warriors had a ton of interest in Lauri Markkanen last summer, but nothing came of it. It’s clear that the Kuminga situation is likely going to fizzle out, and they’ll eventually figure out some sort of contract agreement.

The Warriors apparently have interest in Trey Murphy III as well.. Surprise, surprise, the Warriors want to bring on a high-level player and want to give their disappointing player in the trade. Unsurprisingly, the Pelicans have stated they aren’t interested.

Sources say that the Warriors have a strong affinity for Murphy and have
made outreach to New Orleans as recently as this summer. Yet sources say
that the Pelicans, to be clear, have batted away calls for the 25-year-old,
valuing him highly. The two-way forward will be playing on a contract in
2025-26 — at precisely $25 million — as desirable as his talent.

With Kuminga potentially on the books and being turned down by teams like the Pelicans, they might look at making a move for Markkanen.

But it will be up to Utah if they make a move.

But that’s not the only team that is likely to show interest in Markkanen, Fischer also mentions that the Spurs are also interested in Trey Murphy III. Just like the Warriors, we also know that the Spurs had interest in Lauri Markkanen last summer.

Both of these teams are likely to strike out on Murphy, and with very little in terms of players available in free agency, Markkanen becomes the endgame for a team looking to make a trade.

Again, this all comes down to Utah, and if they want to make any sort of move at all, but there is no question they’re going to receive calls. Considering the Jazz have made it clear they want to keep their top-8 pick next year, they’re walking a tight rope with Markkanen on the team. What if Ace Bailey is really good right away? What if the Jazz get some surprise, high-level play from their young core? It’s going to get interesting real quick next season.
