Yankees manager Aaron Boone commented on Volpe after Saturday’s game, via SNY.
“Volpe made an error, his first one in a few weeks,” he said. “Been playing really well out there. Bad throw, and then not communicating well enough with a new player on the 3-2 count where Benny’s playing behind him.”
Volpe’s 17 errors are tied for his career high as a rookie in 2023. However, he committed those errors over 157 games that year against 128 contests this year.
Furthermore, Volpe’s .208 batting average is a career low and .001 points under his rookie average. On the other hand, trade deadline acquisitions Jose Caballero and Amed Rosario are hitting .235 over 100 games and .289 over 54 games, respectively.
Aaron Boone Makes Startling Admission
Boone was also asked if he thinks New York is “running out of time” to get on track against winning teams, via SNY.
“No, we’re not running out of time, but if we don’t do better, then it’s going to fizzle out and we’re not going to get to where we want to be,” he said.
The Yankees are 1-8 against the Red Sox and 3-7 against the first-place Toronto Blue Jays. They have one series left against each of those clubs after Sunday’s bout with Boston, and they’re six games behind Toronto.
With Oswaldo Cabrera (ankle) on the 60-day IL, New York didn’t have a viable backup shortstop for months besides Oswald Peraza, who mostly plays third. It then dealt the latter player to the Los Angeles Angels, acquired Caballero from the Tampa Bay Rays, and Rosario from the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline.
At this point, it’s hard to justify starting Volpe over the new backups given the Yankees’ place in the standings.
