Nikola Jovic put on a masterclass during Serbia’s warm-up game against Slovenia. After the performance, he credited Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra for inspiring him.

Miami Heat forward Nikola Jovic was beyond impressive in Serbia’s recent outing against Slovenia. With Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra in attendance, Jovic led the scoring charge to help Serbia secure a dominant 106-72 win.

Jovic admitted that Spoelstra’s presence served as extra motivation to improve his performance. While speaking on the matter, the forward said:

“I was definitely motivated. He’s one of the best coaches in the world, if not the best. He went the extra mile to come see me. I definitely wanted to show that I’ve improved and that I’ll be even better next season.”

Spoelstra has been traveling in Europe to check in on his players as they represent their countries. He has been extremely invested in the development of his young players, as the coach recently attended the exhibition game between Sweden and Estonia to watch sophomore Heat guard Pelle Larsson in action.

This approach has gained plaudits from fans and sports personalities alike. Nikola Jovic’s agent, Misko Raznatovic, also shared a heartfelt message, praising Spoelstra for making the trip to see Jovic in action for Serbia.

Spoelstra’s journey was certainly worthwhile given Jovic’s dynamic performance against Slovenia. He took over on offense and led the Serbian team, recording a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds on an impressive 8-for-10 shooting from the field in just 19 minutes.

Jovic’s effort was closely supported by his teammates, with Bogdan Bogdanovic aiding the offensive effort with 14 points. Meanwhile, star big man Nikola Jokic almost recorded a double-double, putting up 10 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.

Jovic demonstrated a lot of versatility as a scorer. While showcasing his innate shooting prowess, the Serbian forward made use of his length to finish in the paint as well.

In his last three exhibition game appearances for Serbia, the 22-year-old established himself as a significant contributor. Aside from his masterclass against Serbia, Jovic also had an impressive showing against Germany, as he put 22 points on 64% shooting from the field.

This presents a positive outlook for his performances in the upcoming season for the Heat. As Miami embraces a younger roster in the upcoming season, players like Jovic will play a much more significant role in the rotation.

Expected to come off the bench, the 22-year-old is likely to continue in his role as a stretch forward. However, his expanding skill set may earn him the liberty to attempt more shots, allowing him to establish an offensive identity.

Last season, Jovic saw a minor uptick in production, as he averaged 10.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, while shooting 45.6% from the field and 37.1% from three-point range. In a more significant role, he could be poised for a breakout campaign in the 2025-26 season.
