Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, died in the early hours of July 3, in Zamora, Spain. The Portuguese international was on his way to England when the tragedy occurred. Diogo Jota had married Rute Cardoso just 11 days before the accident.
“Perfect Birthday”
On Thursday, August 14, the widow of the footballer went through a difficult day, as this was the first 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡day she spent without her love. However, despite everything, Rute Cardoso decided to mark the date with a post she made three years ago, where she celebrated her “perfect” 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡day.
“My perfect 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡day,” she wrote in the caption of the post from three years ago, showing Diogo Jota with one of the couple’s 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren at Windermere Lake in England.
Following the tragic death, the club where Diogo Jota played, Liverpool, decided to pay the remaining salaries of his contract as a way to support the family, particularly Rute Cardoso and the footballer’s 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren. Additionally, The Athletic reported that players and officials from Chelsea, a rival club, decided to donate part of a prize to the families of the two brothers after they won the FIFA Club World Cup. The amount donated exceeds 400,000 euros, according to the same publication.
