Red Sox outfielder finishes sixth for 2024 AL Rookie of Year

Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu finished sixth for the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year. He received two second-place votes and five third-place votes for 11 points overall.

Rookie teammate Ceddanne Rafaela didn’t receive any first-, second- or third-place votes.

Yankees pitcher Luis Gil was the winner. The 26-year-old went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 171 strikeouts and 77 walks in 29 starts. Opponents batted just .189 against him.

Gil received 15 first-place votes, 10 second-place votes and one third-place vote.

Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser (13 first-place votes) finished second and Yankees catcher Austin Wells placed third.

Athletics reliever Mason Miller (fourth) and Guardians reliever Cade Smith (fifth) each received one first-place vote.

Abreu won an AL Gold Glove to become the first Red Sox rookie to win one since Fred Lynn in 1975. He finished with 17 defensive runs saved in 921 ⅓ innings in right field. The 25-year-old batted .253 with a .322 on-base percentage, .459 slugging percentage, .781 OPS, 15 homers, 33 doubles, two triples, 58 RBIs and 59 runs in 132 games (447 plate appearances).

The 24-year-old Rafaela made 72 starts in center field, 71 starts at shortstop and four starts at second base. He finished with a .246/.274/.390/.664 line, 15 homers, 23 doubles, five triples, 75 RBIs, 70 runs, 15 walks and 151 strikeouts in 152 games (571 plate appearances.

Better plate discipline is essential to Rafaela’s continued development as a hitter both against righties and lefties. Rafaela had the worst out of zone swing percentage (46.4%) in the majors last year.

Skenes win NL Rookie of Year

Paul Skenes won the NL Rookie of the Year, the season after being drafted. The Pirates picked him fifth overall in 2023.

He went 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 170 strikeouts and 32 walks in 23 starts (133 innings). Opponents batted .198 against him.

Skenes also is one of three finalists for the NL Cy Young award, which will be announced Wednesday.

Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill finished second and Brewers right fielder/left fielder Jackson Chourio placed third.
