The early story of the Kansas City Chiefs’ rookie class has been Josh Simmons and Jalen Royals highlighting what a great job the front office continues to do. It is easy to argue that none are close to the elite ability the Kansas City decision-makers have reached in quickly pivoting from key players and finding contributors in the draft. The Chiefs continued this trend this offseason, even if not every piece is living up to early expectations.
Linebacker Jeffrey Bassa was always a bit of a project, but he hasn’t been the contributor the organization was hoping to find. The lack of production is bad enough that a Kansas City coach pointed it out while praising another struggling player. However, offering receiver Skyy Moore a level of support is understandable with how poorly things have gone. The receiver is clearly dealing with things beyond the physical when it comes to securing the football.
A talented player has gotten so in his head that things have reached a point where players, coaches, and fans feel bad for the struggling pass catcher. Still, this doesn’t excuse the lack of production or consistency from a veteran piece.
Dave Toub was happy for Skyy Moore and his return touchdown. He also highlights Ashton Gillotte as an “animal” and considers Jeff Bassa a work in progress.
Dave Toub Singles Out Chiefs’ 5th-Round Rookie in Latest Comments
Pete Sweeney reported Dave Toub’s latest comments which included praise for struggling receiver Skyy Moore, who had a return for a touchdown after dropping two balls earlier in the preseason action. Toub also had high praise for Ashton Gillotte, calling him an “animal”, obviously impressed with the early production. However, the praise ended there with Jeffrey Bassa being labeled as a work in progress. This isn’t exactly what you want to hear about a rookie contributor. However, it isn’t entirely unexpected.
Bassa was drafted in the fifth round and wasn’t expected to be a major contributor. His role was as a depth piece and backup at linebacker. Anything more would’ve been a surprise for the rookie. Still, this comment isn’t exactly promising when it comes to the progress the defender is making. It serves as a reason to pay closer attention to his performance in the preseason finale.
While his roster spot does appear safe, it is odd that Toub has such praise for Moore and yet opted to point out the struggles of Bassa. It highlights a healthy level of concern and leaves questions about what the defender’s future might look like with the franchise. Another story to keep an eye on as the Chiefs near the preseason finale.
