The Miami Heat employ two talented centers in Bam Adebayo and Kel’el Ware, but behind those players, the team’s depth at the position is incredibly thin. Still, according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, it’s possible that the two centers share the floor quite a bit in the starting five to begin the coming season.
Chiang said that there’s a “real chance” that Adebayo and Ware will both be members of Miami’s opening lineup in the 2025-26 campaign. Adebayo is a perennial starter and hasn’t come off the bench for the Heat since his sophomore season, but Ware came off the pine in 28 of his 64 games played as a rookie last season.
“The only centers on the Heat’s current standard roster are Adebayo and Ware, and there’s a real chance both are in the starting lineup to begin the season,” Chiang wrote. “Yes, the Heat could stagger their minutes to use them as their two centers throughout most games. But what if there’s an injury or foul trouble?”
At first glance, it might not seem to make all that much sense for the Heat to start Adebayo and Ware together. After all, there would be major question marks surrounding who could adequately play backup center minutes for Miami in such a scenario. Not only that, but Miami’s record in the games Ware started last season left plenty to be desired. The Heat had just a 15-21 record across his 36 starts as a rookie.
However, there is a lot of appeal to pairing the duo in the opening lineup when looking at the bigger picture. Such a frontcourt pairing defending the interior night in and night out would make it difficult for teams to put the ball through the net, as both players are really effective rim protectors.
On top of making life difficult for players looking to score near the basket, Adebayo and Ware would make for a tantalizing offensive duo as well. A lack of spacing seemingly wouldn’t be a huge problem for Miami on offense, either, as Adebayo has added a reliable 3-point shot to his arsenal, while Ware showed a willingness to space the floor from behind the line as a neophyte.
At the very least, it would be worth a shot for Miami to try having Adebayo and Ware in the starting lineup to begin the coming season.
It’s possible they establish themselves as a great frontcourt duo and start alongside one another on the Heat for years to come.
