The Los Angeles Lakers achieved one of their main offseason goals by locking up superstar Luka Dončić.
During the regular season, it was unclear whether Dončić wanted to commit to a long-term contract in LA—but ultimately, he did.
It’s now very apparent that Dončić is focused on winning right away with the Lakers.
“Dončić being just 26 gives the Lakers a far longer timeline to build a championship-contending team, but that doesn’t mean they can slow down and take their time. Dončić told Lakers president Rob Pelinka and coach JJ Redick in May that he’s not interested in taking the slow approach in building a contender,” CBS Sports’ Jasmyn Wimbish wrote.
Dončić also made headlines off the court by giving back to the next generation of athletes.
“Today I’m also committing $5 million to help 77 young athletes around the world chase their dreams, just like I did. Basketball gave me everything, and I’m lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation,” Dončić posted.
The next Laker who could be in line for an extension is Rui Hachimura, although that decision may still be a ways off.
“With the current intel I have, I do not expect Rui to be extended by the Lakers in the next six weeks,” Lakers insider Jovan Buha said. “It’s certainly possible that something happens, but I would say most of what’s been out there is them wanting to keep the books clean and wanting to see whether he starts or whether he’s their sixth man and how the pieces fit this year.”
Hachimura was a key contributor for the Lakers in the playoffs a few years ago.
He continues to be a strong defensive presence, but his health has been a concern at times.
The Lakers plan to take a measured approach and evaluate how involved he’ll be throughout the upcoming season.
