Mets Morning News: McLean’s impressive strong debut boosts faltering Mets, providing a much-needed spark to the team’s struggling season, as the rookie’s outstanding performance brings new hope to the Mets’ faithful fans, who have been waiting for a turnaround.

Seattle Mariners v. New York Mets

Nolan McLean twirled 5 1/3 scoreless innings in his big league debut, buoying the Mets to a 3-1 victory over the Mariners at Citi Field—just their third win in the last 17 games. McLean helped himself at one point with a highlight reel worthy play, fielding a chopper back to the mound behind his back to start an inning-ending 1-4-3 double play to end the third. A Francisco Lindor RBI double plated the only run the Mets would get against Bryan Woo, who logged his 24th consecutive start of six innings or more—one of only a few pitchers to ever accomplish that feat. But the Mets added a couple of insurance runs against the Mariners bullpen and Gregory Soto helped McLean out of a jam in the sixth to hold the lead and contributed a scoreless seventh as well. Edwin Díaz surrendered a solo home run to Eugenio Suárez but nothing else in a two-inning save to cap off the victory.

One of the Mets’ insurance runs in yesterday’s game was notable because it represented Pete Alonso’s 100th RBI of the season.

“I would have booed myself, too,” Carlos Mendoza said of his decision to pull Nolan McClean with one out in the sixth inning.

In order to make room for McLean on the roster, the Mets designated Paul Blackburn for assignment yesterday.

As the Mets play their series finale against the Mariners in Williamsport for the Little League Classic, at Citi Field the NYPD takes on the FDNY in the Battle of the Badges charity baseball game.

MLB allows teams a 27th man for special event games, such as the Little League Classic, so Luisangel Acuña has rejoined the Mets for today’s game.

There is no quick fix for what the Mets are going through (though the injection of energy from McLean’s debut helps), but the team better figure it out fast or risk missing the playoffs, writes Laura Albanese of Newsday.

Around the National League East

The Phillies were shut out 2-0 by Cade Cavalli and the Nationals. It was Cavalli’s first major league win.

But what was worse for the Phillies than the loss was the news that Zack Wheeler hit the injured list due to a blood clot in his right upper extremity.

The Braves thumped the Guardians 10-1. Michael Harris had another multihit game and Nacho Alvarez Jr. contributed three hits as well.

The Marlins rallied for three runs in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough as they fell to the Red Sox 7-5.

Around Major League Baseball

Yankees GM Brian Cashman addressed the media prior to the team’s series opener against the Cardinals and expressed his belief that the Yankees can still win the AL East. Last night, the Yankees won 12-8 on the strength of three home runs.

Josh Hader, who is dealing with a left shoulder capsule sprain, is likely done for the regular season.

Blake Snell pitched six scoreless innings in the Dodgers’ 6-0 victory over the Padres, as LA regained sole possession of first place in the NL West.

This Date in Mets History

Bud Harrelson hit his first major league home run on this date in 1967.
