Chiefs Defender Has to Either Step Up Their Game or Face the Consequences After Underwhelming Preseason Performance, Will They Be Able to Turn Things Around or Will They Be Shipped Out of Town?

New Chiefs Defender Is an Early Camp Disappointment for Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs have a handful of interesting positional battles heading into the final two weeks of the preseason. With Rashee Rice now having clarity on his status to start the year, the battle at receiver has become slightly less entertaining. However, there are still plenty of question marks, including how the depth chart at the corner position is going to fill out, including one possible cut that has been a consistent contributor for the Chiefs dating back to the 2022 season.

It isn’t a hot take to believe Joshua Williams’ roster spot is very much in question after a rocky finish to the 2024 season. Things were bad enough that the Kansas City coaching staff continually decreased snaps, not trusting the veteran to contribute when the games mattered most. This is despite the corner already helping the team win two Super Bowls.

In the first run Williams had a defining play, picking off Joe Burrow with the game tied 20-20 to help give the Chiefs an eventual win. Add in four tackles against the hated Philadelphia Eagles in the first Super Bowl matchup, and his contributions speak for themselves. While these aren’t elite numbers, they were big moments indicative of a player continually playing a role.

Chiefs Veteran Corner in Danger of Losing Roster Spot

Kansas City opting to add Kristian Fulton shook up the position enough to put the corner’s once safe roster spot very much into question. If the season started today, it is safe to assume the corners making the roster would be Trent McDuffie, Kristian Fulton, Jaylon Watson, Nohl Williams, Chris Roland-Wallace, and Nazeeh Johnson.

Every indication out of Kansas City is that this is how the regular season is going to start if things don’t drastically change. While the first four corners are set in stone, the rest is up for debate, and Williams could still make a push for the final spot. Despite being a key player in season’s past, this is a piece of why the Chiefs have stayed on top.

The franchise is never afraid to pivot, even if a player has an accomplished history with the franchise. Williams isn’t going to be any different and needs to go on a camp and preseason run to secure his spot. This means creating a turnover and continually having a nose for the football, making it impossible for the Chiefs to justify what now appears to be an obvious cut.
