Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has made it clear just how much Stephen Curry has meant to his time in charge of the team.
“I’m well aware that the reason I’m still here is because Steph Curry is still here,” Kerr said on a recent episode of the Glue Guys Podcast.
Kerr went deeper on the topic, drawing a comparison to how Gregg Popovich credits Tim Duncan for his legendary Spurs run.
“And I’m not being modest, I’m just telling the truth. Gregg Popovich is one of my best friends and mentors, and every time we sit down for dinner, he holds up his wine glass and he says, ‘Here’s to Tim Duncan.’
“And everyone toasts to Tim Duncan. I love it because it’s genuine and he’s basically telling us the only reason I — and we — are all here is because the lottery fell our way, we got Tim Duncan. Other people didn’t. That’s how I feel about Steph.”
Kerr’s remarks come as the Warriors gear up for the 2025–26 season after a year of roster changes and another deep playoff push.
Golden State secured a postseason berth through the play-in tournament, then advanced past the first round before falling in the conference semifinals.
Since Kerr took over in 2014, Curry has been the team’s foundation. His elite shooting and playmaking have driven Golden State’s success through multiple lineup shifts and big coaching calls.
The past season brought major changes, including the departure of long-time teammate Klay Thompson and the midseason trade for Jimmy Butler. Even with the turnover, Curry’s leadership kept the Warriors in the playoff hunt.
