If there’s been a bright spot in what’s shaping up to be a tough year for the Mets, it’s this: Pete Alonso just cemented himself in club history. On August 12, Alonso launched his 253rd career home run, a no-doubter off Braves ace Spencer Strider, making him the New York Mets’ all-time leader in home runs. And while the team may not be in playoff position, the Polar Bear’s latest milestone is another reminder of how central he’s been to this franchise since breaking onto the scene in 2019.
Alonso has been a constant source of power and emotion-a fan favorite who shows up big in big moments. From his Rookie of the Year campaign to Home Run Derby heroics, and now this historic blast, he’s given Mets fans a lot to cheer about. But behind the celebration, there’s also an air of uncertainty about what comes next.
Here’s the contractual reality: Alonso is on the second year of a two-year, $54 million deal-and he holds a player option that allows him to test free agency this offseason. There’s a high likelihood he opts out.
Unless something unexpected happens from now through season’s end-like a significant injury or performance dip-it’d make a lot of financial sense. He’s reportedly set to earn $30 million in 2025, with a built-in $24 million fallback for 2026.
That 2026 number, however, acts more like a safety net than a long-term commitment. Given his consistent production, Alonso will likely look for the kind of long-term deal he didn’t get last offseason.
But don’t count him out of Queens just yet. Alonso addressed his status after his record-setting game, and if his comments are any indicator, his heart is still very much in New York.
“I love the city of New York. I love the fanbase.

It’s been great,” he told reporters following the game. “The business is the business side.
If they choose to go in another direction, [that’s] their choice-but for me, it’s been an absolute treat and pleasure playing here.”
And it didn’t sound like lip service.
“This group is really special,” Alonso continued. “It was one of the biggest reasons why I came back.
Not only the talent, but the people. Not just on the team-coaching staff, clubhouse staff, front office, training room.
We just have an incredible group here that has a great purpose. It’s been great playing here.
I hope it doesn’t end.”

Those are the kind of words that stick with a fanbase-and a front office.
There’s no question Alonso will have options. Power like his doesn’t stay unsigned for long.
But the bond he’s built with the organization, the city, and its fans doesn’t vanish the second he hits free agency. If anything, those ties could factor into future negotiations-whether that’s in Flushing or elsewhere.
For now, Mets fans are soaking in the moment. A new all-time home run king wears the blue and orange, and his name is Pete Alonso.
How long he continues to add to that total in New York? That’s the next chapter.
But with Alonso, the story has already been a special one-and it’s far from over.
