The Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiver battle just received a major shake-up with the news Rashee Rice won’t be suspended for the first weeks of the season. Chiefs fans won’t know about the star’s status until September 30th or later, meaning the star pass-catcher is starting the season as a member of the active roster.

This is bad news for the bottom of the depth chart battle that has become incredibly heated.

ESPN sources: Chiefs WR Rashee Rice is expected to have his disciplinary hearing with the NFL on Tuesday, Sept 30 in New York. This means that Rice now is likely to be able to play the first four weeks of this season before any potential discipline is imposed for his role in a… pic.twitter.com/nC37poNfEb

Chiefs Receiver Skyy Moore Appears Destined to be Surprise Roster Cut

Skyy Moore was a piece of this and entered camp and the preseason with an obvious chance to make the roster. The experience offered an edge, even if the pass-catcher has never fully lived up to expectations. Moore has been a solid depth piece, but never the contributor the Chiefs believe they had added. It is one of the few misses from a Kansas City front office with a long list of home runs.

For Moore, the news of Rice returning sooner than expected likely spells the end of his time on the active roster. Where this gets a little tricky is the fact that the franchise is still expecting a suspension. Parting ways with a piece that would have been a proven depth piece is a bit of a concern, but the only choice in the current predicament.

Nikko Remigio, Tyquan Thornton, and Moore were contending for what was believed to be two spots based on the expectation of a likely suspension. This news means there is now one remaining role if Hollywood Brown is healthy by the start of the season. With this in mind, Moore is the obvious first man out based on camp performance.

Remigio has coaches defending him and his future value, while Thornton is consistently making plays throughout camp and the preseason. Seeing the chemistry within the offense, it is difficult to guess which player is going to get priority as the Chiefs debate the future.

Whichever direction the Chiefs turn, it seems likely the franchise is going to quickly need to fill another hole after the first four weeks of the season. Regardless, this spells the end for Moore, who has been a consistent source of frustration.

If Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes cannot find a way to make things work, it seems very unlikely there is much of a future for the veteran moving forward.

Perhaps opening the door for the Chiefs to offer Moore a practice squad role in an effort to maintain depth at the position.
