BREAKING: Kansas City Chiefs Sign Jadeveon Clowney: Is This the Defensive Boost They’ve Been Looking For?

May be an image of 1 person, playing football and text that says '1ቴ 30 BREAKING NEWS Chiefs aim to sign veteran Jadeveon Clowney to strengthen pass rush and add versatile depth after their Super Bowl defensive struggles.'

The Kansas City Chiefs failed at winning three Super Bowls in a row last year when they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Chiefs had one of the best defenses in the NFL in 2024, yet, it was crushed into submission during the Super Bowl, giving up forty points to the Eagles.

The Eagles were too talented all around for the Chiefs in their route to Super Bowl victory, and it’s important the Chiefs add more talent and depth in their 2025 run. The defense could add more depth in several positions. With not many starting-caliber free agents out there still, there are a few good options that could provide rotational depth for a key position.

Rushing the passer has become more important than ever, and with the second edge on the Chiefs only tallying two-and-a-half sacks last year, there is plenty of room for improvement. If you can’t get sacks with Chris Jones and George Karlaftis on the line with you, you are not an efficient rusher. That is why the Kansas City Chiefs will sign pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been one of the best at grabbing veterans who still have enough production in their game when they are going under the radar. They have done it time and time again with wide receivers, running backs, and the offensive line. It’s time they do that with their defense now.

Their defense has been mostly homegrown through the draft, which is why they have had so much success. With a majority of their defense on their rookie contracts and quickly becoming quality starters, they have been able to pick up players via free agency for their offense. They hope rookies Ashton Gillotte and Omar Norman-Lott, both of whom are defensive linemen, can quickly provide pass-rushing production to their defensive line behind starters Mike Pennel and Mike Danna.

That shouldn’t stop the Chiefs from adding an 11-year veteran who still has some juice in him, like Jadeveon Clowney. In 2024, the Buffalo Bills added Von Miller to be a third-down pass rush specialist. Leading him to sign with the Washington Commanders this offseason. This could be a similar role they can have for Clowney. He could also line up all over the line in pass rush situations.

Jadeveon Clowney Can Still Get After the Quarterback

Jadeveon Clowney has stated he intends to play in 2025 and is still sitting on the free agent market. Potentially waiting to see how the preseason goes and wait for a potential spot on a contending team like the Chiefs. Clowney spent the 2023 season in Baltimore and was able to tally nine-and-a-half sacks. He was on a bad Carolina Panthers team in 2024. Still able to get just shy of six sacks on the year.

Clowney doesn’t turn 33 until next February. While he may not be the freak athlete he once was, he continues to show he can be a force and cause havoc in the trenches. With his ability to line up as a linebacker, edge, or defensive tackle, it could give Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo a Swiss Army knife secret weapon this season.

Spagnuolo has been the best defensive coordinator in the league for several years now and looks to be staying in Kansas City for as long as they want him. Another weapon like that could cause a lot of problems. Their defensive line let them down in the Super Bowl, so adding more quality depth while hoping for high-level production from the rookies would be for the best. That is why the Kansas City Chiefs will sign Jadeveon Clowney.
