Aaron Boone bumps fists with Jasson Domínguez after a game against the Royals.
There are a few different ways to look at the New York Yankees‘ play during the 2025 campaign. The Yankees, at 63-56, obviously haven’t been the worst team in baseball, but they’re six games out in the American League East and just 3-7 over their last 10 games. A few months ago, it looked like the Yankees would run away with the division, at the very least.
Now, this has to fall on someone, and many believe that Aaron Boone will eventually be the one who gets the short end of the stick.
Who Should the Yankees Replace Aaron Boone With?
When searching for replacements for the New York Yankees’ skipper, Michael O’Brien of SI Live had some intriguing options for the Yankees to consider. The Astros’ sign-stealing cheating allegations stopped Carlos Beltran from becoming the New York Mets’ manager in 2019.
“The Yankees clearly valued Aaron Boone’s ties to the franchise when they hired him, so could that same connection make Carlos Beltrán an appealing option if they decide to make a switch? Beltrán, who fell just short of Hall of Fame induction this year but remains a strong future candidate, spent three seasons in the Bronx as a player from 2014 to 2016. During that stretch, he posted a solid .270 batting average with 180 RBI and 335 hits across 341 games in Pinstripes,” he wrote.
“He was set to gain managerial experience after being hired by the crosstown rival Mets in November 2019; while that might have been forgivable in the eyes of Yankees fans, he ultimately never managed a game in Queens after his role in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal came to light—an act that many would consider far less excusable.”
Could New York Replace Aaron Boone With a Veteran Manager?
The New York Yankees have demonstrated that they prefer to keep things simple and prioritize hiring former players.
They did so with Boone and others, but it remains uncertain if they want to do that again.
It isn’t exactly working out for the Yankees with Boone, despite the issues likely not being his fault.
O’Brien had another intriguing name in the form of Joe Maddon.
Throughout Maddon’s career, he was one of the better managers in Major League Baseball, winning a World Series, two pennants, and three Manager of the Year Awards. He owns a 1,382-1,216 record over 19 years with the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs, and Los Angeles Angels.
“The Yankees are seeking a completely fresh start with someone unconnected to the organization but seasoned in managing big-market teams, Joe Maddon could emerge as a dark horse candidate to take the reins in the Bronx…
“As mentioned earlier, if Yankees brass still believes breaking their World Series drought is possible this season, why not give the man who ended the Cubs’ 108-year wait for a championship a chance?”
Could Aaron Boone Stay Despite a Concerning Season?
Despite many wanting Boone fired by the New York Yankees, it’s also essential to understand what’s happening.
Boone has dealt with injuries to his best pitcher, Gerrit Cole, and players like Devin Williams have struggled. Of course, some could suggest that Boone hasn’t put his players in the best spot, like Williams, but ultimately, he needs his players to perform.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic also believes that’s the case, even going as far as saying that the Yankees’ struggles aren’t on Boone. “This is not on Aaron Boone,” Bowden said. “He’s the defending American League Champion manager. He managed into the World Series last year.”
