Chiefs Star Admits Other Interests Led to On-Field Struggles Over Last 2 Seasons

The Kansas City Chiefs made another run to the Super Bowl during the 2024 season. Unfortunately, they came up just short of their goal of repeating as NFL champions as they fell to the Philadelphia Eagles, 40-22, in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated.

With that failed attempt at securing another championship now in the rearview mirror, one of the cornerstones of the offense is going on the record to admit that he feels he hasn’t brought the best version of himself to the field day in and day out over the last two seasons.

As fans across all sports have seen throughout the years, reaching a certain level of fame comes with opportunities unrelated to the thing that helped make you a household name in the first place. Chiefs star Travis Kelce let that happen to him and is now opening up about the drop in production that came with it.

“I think it might have slipped a little bit because I did have a little bit more focus in trying to set myself up. And opportunities came up where I was excited to venture into a new world of acting and being an entertainer,” Kelce told GQ.

Chiefs’ Travis Kelce Admits Harsh Truth About His Performance

While this admission is certainly the last thing fans in Kansas City expected to hear from Kelce, as he has always prided himself on how seriously he takes being a professional football player. That said, it cannot come as a shocking reality given how his relationship with Taylor Swift brought him into the public eye in a brand new way.

As much as Kelce seemingly regrets letting his life away from the football field impact what he was able to accomplish, individually, on it, he has no regrets about exploring those off-field interests as he moves closer to retirement. Kelce does, however, wish that he had been able to provide the Chiefs these past two seasons were more indicative of what he believes he is capable of.

“I don’t say this as ‘I shouldn’t have done it.’ I’m just saying that my work ethic is such that I have so much pride in how I do things that I never want the product to tail off, and I feel like these past two years haven’t been to my standard, Kelce continued. I just have such a motivation to show up this year for my guys.”

While there was a noticeable drop in production during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, it’s not like Kelce completely fell off as a player. Over the past two seasons, Kelce has a total of 190 receptions for 1,807 yards and eight total touchdowns.

Those numbers may be down from what has been considered the norm for Kelce. With that being said, there are plenty of teams out there that wish they had a tight end who could produce at that level for their franchise.

Fortunately for Kelce, the 2025 campaign is just weeks away. The chance to tap into the motivation he has inside of him to show the football world that he is still the threat on offense that he has been throughout his storied career is at his doorstep. We’ll find out soon enough just what he does with that opportunity.
