Chelsea legend Frank Leboeuf has criticized RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko’s decision to choose Manchester United over Newcastle United, Newspremises reports.
After weeks of intense speculation and competition from top European clubs, United secured the signing of Sesko from the Bundesliga side.
The two clubs are reportedly in the final stages of completing a deal that will see the prolific Slovenian striker move to Old Trafford.
According to sources close to the negotiations, a full agreement has been reached between United and Leipzig for a base fee of €76.5 million, with an additional €8.5 million in performance-based add-ons, bringing the total package to €85 million.
However, former French international Frank Leboeuf has questioned Sesko’s decision, asserting that he would not have chosen the Red Devils over Newcastle United.
Both Manchester United and Newcastle United expressed interest in Sesko, with reports indicating that Leipzig had initially accepted Newcastle’s offer, valued at €82.5 million, along with a further €2.5 million in performance-related add-ons.
Despite this, Sesko appears determined to join Manchester United, showing little interest in other suitors.
During a segment on ESPNFC, Leboeuf was asked what decision he would make if he were in Sesko’s position.
He responded candidly:
“Right now, absolutely not — I wouldn’t choose Manchester United over Newcastle if I were Sesko. Based on Manchester United’s current form and what I’ve seen from Newcastle over the past two seasons, I would definitely pick Newcastle. They consistently compete for Champions League or Europa League qualification.
“With United, there’s too much uncertainty. They were once among the greatest clubs in the world — perhaps even the best — but that’s no longer the case.
“Still, if it’s his dream to play for United, we should respect that and let him pursue it. Personally, though, I wouldn’t make the move to Old Trafford if I were him.”
Manchester United, who are looking to strengthen their squad, particularly their attacking line ahead of the 2025/26 season, have now added Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko to their roster.
