Aaron Boone’s reputation may have contributed to a quick hook on Sunday.
The New York Yankees manager has a habit of chirping at umpires, and Boone got tossed again early in a critical American League matchup against the Houston Astros.
In the bottom of the third inning, Boone barked at home-plate umpire Derek Thomas after he called a strike around the knees to Yankees third baseman Ryan McMahon. Thomas turned to the dugout and said: “I’ve heard you enough, Aaron.”
Boone appeared to say something else, leading the umpire to toss the skipper for an MLB-leading fifth time this season. The 52-year-old marched onto the field to get his money’s worth.
Talkin’ Yanks shared a clip from the YES Network broadcast on social media.

“You need to fix it!” Boone shouted at the umpire before dropping an expletive.
Yankees fans watching will contest that the umpire did not fix it. With the bases loaded and two out in the inning, Max Fried threw a fastball on the high outside corner to Astros rookie Cam Smith. The All-Star pitcher thought he had an inning-ending strikeout, but Thomas instead called ball three.
On the next pitch, Smith hit a two-run double that extended Houston’s lead to 4-0.

Boone’s ejection hasn’t lit a fire under his offense either. Astros starting pitcher Jason Alexander, a 32-year-old journeyman who entered the game with a 5.57 career ERA, didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning.
Boone has now been ejected 44 times in 1,150 career games, the fourth-most among all active managers. He trails veterans Bruce Bochy, Bob Melvin and Terry Francona, each of whom has managed over 3,000 career games.
The Yankees have lost control of the American League East, and they began Sunday only a half-game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians for the final wild-card spot. They’d fall to 9-12 since the All-Star break if they don’t rally at home to defeat the Astros on Sunday.
