Lakers Trade Rumors: Cam Johnson Could Be Target, But Rui Hachimura's Status Complicates Deal

The Los Angeles Lakers are riding high after their 120-115 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Friday’s NBA Emirates Cup group stage opener.

At 8-4 under first-year head coach JJ Redick, the Lakers currently sit fifth in the Western Conference standings.

Despite their strong start, the Lakers might be looking to bolster their roster before the trade deadline.

According to The Athletic’s Johan Buha, Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson could be a potential target for the purple and gold. “I think Cam would be a great fit with the Lakers,” Buha said in his latest YouTube mailbag.

However, he emphasized that any deal would depend on the draft capital required to land the 6-foot-8 forward, who’s in the second year of a four-year, $94.5 million contract with Brooklyn.

Johnson is putting up career numbers this season, averaging 16.5, along with 4.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists through 13 games.

With the struggling Nets sitting at 5-9 and fighting for a Play-In spot, they might be motivated to move veterans like Johnson for future assets.

However, making the money work in any potential deal could be tricky. Johnson’s $23.6 million cap hit means the Lakers would likely need to part with some combination of Rui Hachimura ($17 million), Gabe Vincent ($11 million), and Jarred Vanderbilt ($10.7 million).

Buha expressed hesitation about including Hachimura in any potential deal. The former Gonzaga forward is thriving under Redick’s system, averaging 12.7 points and 6.1 rebounds while shooting a scorching 50.0% from three-point range. “If the price is Hachimura for Johnson, you can talk me into it but I’m not sold,” Buha admitted.

“I’m not sure that Cam is that much of an upgrade depending on the draft capital required.” With the Lakers currently tied for the 10th-best odds (+2800) to win the NBA Finals according to FanDuel Sportsbook, any major roster moves will need careful consideration.
