What started as a routine training camp session for the Kansas City Chiefs at Missouri Western State University quickly turned into turmoil as dark storm clouds gathered over St. Joseph, Missouri, forcing an emergency evacuation.

Within an hour of practice beginning, thunder and lightning swept the area. Security and stadium staff rushed to move fans to safety, as anxious families and children hurried from the stands toward designated shelters.

Tragedy struck just outside Spratt Stadium. In the confusion, a bolt of lightning hit a fan, sending shockwaves through the crowd. Medical personnel rushed to help, but sadly, the victim could not be saved.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the victim’s family,” a Chiefs spokesperson said. “Fan safety is always our highest priority. We will do everything possible to support their loved ones during this unimaginable time.”

This is the second lightning-related evacuation at camp within a week, following a similar scare on July 30. Players and coaches were also ushered indoors, cutting short a critical practice session as the team prepares for preseason.

Head coach Andy Reid canceled his post-practice press conference. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and players Travis Kelce, Nazeeh Johnson, and Carson Steele addressed the media, focusing on safety and expressing sympathy for those affected.

Chiefs Kingdom responded in shock and sorrow. Hundreds of fans shared prayers and condolences across social media. “This is a tragedy no one could predict. We’re praying for the family,” one supporter wrote in a Facebook group.

As training camp resumes, the franchise’s top priority has shifted from on-field performance to ensuring the safety of everyone present. Team officials confirmed a review of all safety protocols is already underway for the remainder of camp.
