Trade Report: Dodgers trade James Outman to Twins in Brock Stewart deal

Brock Stewart returning to the Dodgers was the first part of Thursday’s trade that was reported, with the Twins sending the 33-year-old reliever back to the team that drafted him.

Now we know the rest of the transaction, with outfielder James Outman sent to Minnesota, the Dodgers announced on Thursday.

Alden González of ESPN was first to report Outman to the Twins, which was also confirmed by Fabian Ardaya at The Athletic and Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Outman finished third in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2023, but has struggled mightily in the majors since. This year he has only four hits in 39 at-bats with the Dodgers with 18 strikeouts, four walks, two home runs, and a double, hitting .103/.205/.282.

Outman, 28, was improving as the season went on in Triple-A Oklahoma City, hitting .289/.378/.592 with 20 home runs, 20 doubles, and 14 stolen bases in 70 games.

In case it wasn’t obvious that the Dodgers would add position player(s) at the trade deadline, sending out Hunter Feduccia and Outman in the first two reported trades makes it crystal clear.

Without Outman, who was on the active roster, and Feduccia, the Dodgers only have 15 position players currently on the 40-man roster. And three of them — Max Muncy, Hyeseong Kim, and Kiké Hernández — are currently on the injured list.
