LeSean McCoy’s forgettable Chiefs run won’t change his Hall of Fame fate

Oakland Raiders v Kansas City Chiefs

A year from now will see a lot of key players become eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Frank Gore, and Jason Witten. One player will also become eligible for the NFL’s highest honor is LeSean McCoy, who spent one year as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

If McCoy does manage to get into the Hall of Fame, it won’t be because of anything he did with the Chiefs. It was unfortunate to see that partnership go down the way it did because fans were elated when Shady McCoy chose to link up with the Chiefs for the 2019 season.

LeSean McCoy’s Hall of Fame résumé skips right over the Chiefs

It made perfect sense why he’d be coming to Kansas City considering his history with Andy Reid in Philadelphia. The Chiefs also needed help at running back to give Patrick Mahomes and the offense more help in the quarterback’s second full season as the starter.

What ultimately ended up happening was that McCoy didn’t live up to the hype. McCoy was the backup running back behind Damien Williams and started off on a high note with 81 rushing yards in his first game as a Chief. That was about where the highs stopped, however. He made fans nervous with the way he carried the football and fumbled three times.

By the time the playoffs rolled around, McCoy was inactive for all but one game of the Chiefs’ eventual Super Bowl run. Fans knew he wasn’t going to be capable of doing everything he did in his prime but the signing was still looked at as a disappointment. He rushed for 465 yards and four touchdowns and had 181 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown as well.

While the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win got McCoy the first ring of his career, most fans look back on his stint with the team as a disappointment. His Chiefs stint didn’t go according to plan but the guy still has a solid case for the Hall of Fame.

Shady finished his prolific career with over 11,000 yards and 73 rushing touchdowns while tallying exactly 15,000 scrimmage yards and 89 total touchdowns. He’s 23rd in all-time leading rushing yards and out of the 22 guys ahead of him, 16 are in the Hall of Fame (and three that haven’t been inducted yet aren’t eligible yet, much like McCoy). He also has two Super Bowl wins to his name, as he won another one with the Buccaneers one year after getting his first ring with K.C.

If McCoy does find his way into the Hall of Fame, it’ll be well-deserved but it’ll be for what he did with the Eagles and Bills and not because of his brief stint in Kansas City. That being said, the Chiefs did help get him his first ring and Super Bowl victories are important when it comes to reaching the Hall of Fame.

There’s no doubt that Shady deserves the honor and even if his time in K.C. didn’t go the way everyone had hoped, it’ll still be nice to see him succeed.
