The Kansas City Chiefs are once again seeing some players go at it after the whistle. However, this time it was between two players you wouldn’t expect.  Full details are below.

It may have been the heat, or perhaps the intensity of the third day of pads-on practice that led to the first scuffle in the Kansas City Chiefs training camp:

Rookie offensive lineman Josh Simmons starred in an altercation with fellow rookie defensive end Ashton Gillotte Tuesday morning.

The left tackle and the pass rusher participated in a 9-on-7 period repetition, which ended in Simmons punching Gillotte and the latter removing Simmons’ helmet, Chiefs reporter Nate Taylor shared on X.

Seeing fights during training camp is common, especially when it involves two teammates. Simmons is one of the most intriguing Chiefs’ additions of the 2025 offseason after he was selected with the No. 32 overall pick in April’s draft.

The expectations are high for the former Ohio State star now that he’ll have the responsibility of protecting Patrick Mahomes.

The expectations are high for the former Ohio State star now that he’ll have the responsibility of protecting Patrick Mahomes.

Back in March, an anonymous scout slammed Simmons for his personality, saying that the 22-year-old’s mentality was an issue and he had no sense of urgency. While he was criticized for his ability, too, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach was over the moon after the team landed with the final pick of the first round. Simmons’ draft stock had taken a hit after a season-ending injury.

“I think everyone knows that when he’s healthy and with the tape he had early on last year before the injury, it puts him in the upper echelon of what he could be as a future starter and difference-maker at left tackle,” Veach said. “Had it not been for that injury, he’s probably not there.”

Training camp fights are common nowadays, as everybody has something to prove to teammates, coaches and executives. Simmons dealt with injuries during his final season in college and now is trying to leave that in the past.

Mahomes was another Chief ecstatic with Simmons’ ability not only to play but to learn quickly. On Tuesday, Mahomes lauded Simmons’ work ethic, confirming that he was being tested with every drill.

“He’s done a great job with that and then learning,” Mahomes said. “He’s getting tested every single day with Spags and being able to pick up blitzes and do all different kind of stuff as well as going against some great pass rushing, so I’m excited for the future that he has.”

Simmons and Gillotte aren’t expected to face any serious punishment for their practice scuffle. It’s just part of the atmosphere in training camp as two rookies battle to secure a place on an NFL roster.
