Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns may be preparing to make a big splash — or more — before Thursday’s trade deadline.
According to Buster Olney of ESPN, the Mets “might be the most aggressive club adding players, looking for a starter who could pitch Game 1, 2 or 3 of a postseason series. Relief pitching and an outfielder —perhaps Cedric Mullins of the Baltimore Orioles — are also among their needs.
Despite the rotation returning to full health, it’s clear the Mets would only want to add a starting pitcher if it is a top-of-the-rotation one.
Last week, the Mets were linked to Padres starter Dylan Cease. According to Olney, they’re among contending teams that have “talked about him.”
The Mets have already begun to address their bullpen needs with the acquisition of left-handed reliever Gregory Soto from the Baltimore Orioles last week.
The Mets’ center fielders, which include Tyrone Taylor and, more recently, Jeff McNeil, collectively have a .221/.304/.356 batting line, which is worth an 88 wRC+, 16th in the majors.
