Chiefs sign former Jayhawk and UFL star after WR injuries shake up camp

Memphis Showboats v Houston Roughnecks

Training camp hasn’t exactly gone the way the Kansas City Chiefs have hoped, at least not when it comes to the wide receiver position. Both Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy have gotten dinged up in the padded practices and now the Chiefs need to bring in more reinforcements.

The Chiefs have agreed on a deal with UFL wide receiver Kwamie Lassiter II, according to James Larsen. If that name sounds familiar to some of you, that’s probably because Lassiter played his college football at the University of Kansas tallying over 1,500 yards and seven touchdowns during his time with the Jayhawks.

Lassiter went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft but eventually signed with the Bengals as a UDFA. He appeared in two games total in 2022 and 2023 but the Bengals eventually parted ways with him before the 2024 season. From there, Lassiter headed to the UFL where he spent this year with the Memphis Showboats, notching 24 catches for 271 yards and one touchdown in eight games.

Chiefs sign Kwamie Lassiter to bolster WR depth

This is not a signing that fans should get too excited about. Lassiter is likely what many refer to as a camp body, coming in to spend time with the team this summer and then getting cut when the preseason wraps up.

Lassiter won’t factor into the starting group (and if he does then something’s gone terribly wrong or he looks nearly unstoppable in camp) but perhaps he can work his way onto the practice squad. After all, he was able to stick around in Cincinnati for two years and the Bengals have never been void of receiver talent. Clearly something was working for him there.

As for the injuries the Chiefs have seen at wide receiver, Brown exited practice with a leg injury on Tuesday and Worthy was diagnosed with a concussion. The good news is that we’re still over a month away from the start of the regular season so the Chiefs can be cautious with two of their injured receivers.

We’ll just have to see if Lassiter can make any sort of positive impression with the Chiefs and try to stick around a little longer.
