UPDATE: The Dodgers announced that Shohei Ohtani left Wednesday’s game with cramps.
ORIGINAL STORY: The Los Angeles Dodgers and their fans are likely holding their breath when it comes to their star pitcher.
Shohei Ohtani was pulled from Wednesday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds in the middle of an at-bat in the fourth inning after he threw six straight balls — none of them particularly close. The pitcher walked off the mound with a trainer looking frustrated.
Ohtani made his 2025 pitching debut in June after missing the entire 2024 season after he tore his UCL in August 2023. The two-way phenom underwent elbow surgery that September, and had another surgery on his shoulder in September 2024 to repair a torn labrum.
Despite the UCL tear, Ohtani still played in 159 games in 2024 and made MLB history when he became the first major league player to have at least 50 home runs and as many stolen bases. The 31-year-old finished with 54 homers and 59 stolen bases.
Ohtani’s offense has helped the Dodgers to a National League West-best 63-45 record this season with 38 home runs and 73 RBI.
It’s unclear if Ohtani was removed due to injury, but he remained in the game as the Dodgers designated hitter.
