In an emotional and revealing interview, former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has opened up about his decision to reject multiple offers from Premier League clubs this summer, insisting that he simply could not bring himself to wear the shirt of another English side.

De Gea, who left Manchester United in 2023 after 12 seasons at Old Trafford, has remained a free agent, sparking widespread speculation about a potential return to top-flight football — with reported interest from clubs like Newcastle, West Ham, and even a surprise approach from Chelsea.

But now, speaking for the first time in months, the Spanish shot-stopper has set the record straight.

“Yes, I had offers to come back to the Premier League this summer. Some of them were very good, even tempting. But I said no. I couldn’t join another team in England… not after everything I lived with Manchester United. That club is a part of me. That city, those fans — it’s more than just football.”

De Gea made 545 appearances for United, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Europa League. He was also named the club’s Player of the Year on four occasions, becoming a fan favourite and one of the most consistent performers during some of the club’s toughest years post-Ferguson.

His refusal to return to England unless it was for United has only deepened the admiration from Red Devils supporters, many of whom continue to call for his return — especially after a season of inconsistent goalkeeping performances under Erik ten Hag’s tenure, and now under new manager Rúben Amorim.

While De Gea’s future remains uncertain, one thing is crystal clear: his heart still beats for Manchester United.
