The Dodgers are going to call up infielder Alex Freeland from Triple-A Oklahoma City, per Fabian Ardaya at The Athletic, addressing a glaring need for position player depth.
Jack Harris at the Los Angeles Times also reported Freeland getting the call, though the timing of the move and the corresponding active roster move is not yet known.
Max Muncy suffering a bone bruise on his left knee on July 2, coupled with Kiké Hernández out since July 7 with left elbow inflammation has left the Dodgers lacking for over three weeks.
The only position player on the 40-man roster who is not already active or on the injured list is catcher Hunter Feduccia. The team currently has an open spot, so no corresponding move would be needed to create 40-man roster space.
Estuery Ruiz was called up when Muncy landed on the injured list, and James Outman got the call when Hernández went down. Neither outfielder has played very much, with Ruiz batting 21 times in his 19 games active and Outman at 17 plate appearances in his 15 games.
Third base has been split between Tommy Edman (10 starts) Miguel Rojas (nine starts) since Muncy went down.
Hyeseong Kim has taken the reins at second base, starting 13 of 17 games at the position in July. But he’s also going through a hellacious slump, just 12-for-57 (.211/.224/.228) with 24 strikeouts this month, through his first three at-bats on Monday in Cincinnati. Kim is also dealing with a shoulder injury that has been very noticeably bothering him while batting recently.
As a team, the Dodgers without Muncy through Sunday averaged only 3.58 runs per game, hitting just .219/.294/.374 with an 88 wRC+ that ranks 26th in the majors over their last 19 games, winning only six times.
Freeland is a shortstop by trade but has also been playing third base regularly, starting 16 of the 19 games for Oklahoma City at the hot corner since Muncy got hurt. Freeland also played third base 10 games earlier in the season when Kim would play the occasional shortstop in Triple-A.
Freeland on the season is hitting .253/.377/.421 with 26 doubles, 12 home runs, 17 stolen bases, and a 108 wRC+ for the Comets this season. The switch-hitter is hitting better batting left-handed this season, at .267/.391/.444 against right-handed pitching.
The Dodgers drafted Freeland in the third round in 2022 out of UCF, and he was a consensus top-100 prospect in baseball before the season. In midseason list updates, Freeland was ranked 35th by MLB Pipeline and 56th by Baseball America,
