Al Horford was expected to sign with the Warriors at the start of NBA free agency, but that hasn’t come together yet. The Celtics big man remains unsigned heading into the final days of July, though Golden State still appears to be the frontrunner.
ESPN’s Anthony Slater, on a recent NBA Today appearance, spoke about the Warriors’ plans and how they need a big man like Horford on the roster.
“All signs point to Al Horford,” Slater said. “They’re certainly interested in him. I would say, if they’re not able to get that done. Horford, who you hear is also mulling retirement, if he’s on the roster next year, it’s a big miss by the Warriors because that’s in their plans. They need a stretch five.”
Horford, who turned 39 last month, has spent the past four years with the Celtics. Throughout last season, it felt like the big man could have returned to Boston for another season, but Jayson Tatum’s ruptured Achilles tendon changed the equation. Boston president Brad Stevens said it was “unlikely” Horford would end up back on the roster as the Celtics have seemingly moved on with their offseason.
Even though Horford will be one of the oldest players in the NBA next season, if he does sign with a team, he showed he can still be a contributor. The Celtics leaned on him during the playoffs heavily as Kristaps Porzingis battled his illness at the time. While Horford can’t contribute like he did when he was in his prime, he proved that he can still be a useful bench piece at this point in his career.
It’s unclear when Horford could end up signing with the Warriors or another team. Perhaps he could also end up retiring, which is reportedly on the table. Golden State has its own uncertainty with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga, who’s looking for a payday amid limited options.
