The Los Angeles Dodgers desperately need bullpen help as the later stages of the season approach.
A familiar face in free agent right-hander Joe Kelly is expected to throw for the team soon, according to MLB insider Robert Murray.
The current state of the Dodgers’ pitching roster has the eighth-highest ERA in MLB. Tanner Scott, the man entrusted with 26 save opportunities, leads MLB with seven blown saves.
Scott was moved to the 15-day injured list last week with left elbow inflammation, but it brings up another point regarding the Dodgers’ hurlers. Injuries have plagued the team since spring training and appear to still be marring mound availability.
For these reasons and more, perhaps that is why Kelly is getting another opportunity to don a Dodgers uniform.
Kelly sported a 4.78 ERA across 32 innings of work last season, but his October performances are likely what the Dodgers would want to recapture if he is offered a deal.
The 37-year-old from Anaheim threw 11.1 innings during the 2018 playoff run for the Boston Red Sox, allowing just one earned run during this time.
As a Dodger during the 2020 campaign, he had just a 2.45 ERA across five appearances, leading to his second ring.
Surely, things may have changed for the right-hander as he has still been around the game of baseball this year, although as a manager for his son’s youth team, but the hope is that Kelly’s 98.1 mph fastball average from last season still holds up.
As a 36-year-old, he was still in the 98th percentile among active pitchers with that velocity.
Another lethal offering from Kelly last season was his knuckle curve, allowing just a .091 batting average against it, with batters swinging and missing 42.4 percent of the time.
At the very least, Kelly returning as a clubhouse presence, fan favorite, and veteran leader can all prove to be conducive to LA as they make the final push to October.
