Sunday’s first padded practice of the Kansas City Chiefs’ 2025 training camp offered a glimpse into both quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ array of offensive weapons and the questions lingering along the offensive line.
Last season, Kansas City’s front surrendered 41 sacks, including 36 sacks of Mahomes, representing his highest single‑campaign total, and the unit ranked just 17th in yardage and 15th in scoring, numbers uncharacteristic for an offense built around one of the league’s premier quarterbacks.
In response, the Chiefs invested heavily in free agency and the draft, signing veteran Jaylon Moore to shore up the left tackle spot and selecting the Ohio State Buckeyes’ Josh Simmons in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
On Sunday, when asked about the different rotations and competition on the offensive line, Mahomes noted: “Competition breeds excellence, and I think Coach Reid always preached that. You get a real feel when the pads are on.”
“We have a good defensive line, a lot of blitzes from Spags. These guys are going to get tested,” Mahomes continued. “We’ll see who comes out the best man. I’m excited to build that chemistry and get ready for the season.”
Fans online were quick to chime in on Mahomes’ comments.
“Ready for the battles 🏈,” said one user.
“Let’s go!,” one other commenter responded.
“Watch the sparks fly this camp,” another fan replied.
“Iron sharpens iron and apparently Mahomes sharpens everyone,” one other user commented.
“Go boys,” said another user.
“Mahomes hyping that Chiefs camp grind, let’s see who rises up 🏈🔥,” another fan responded.

If Simmons can translate his college promise into NFL consistency, and if Moore or Jawaan Taylor (last year’s starter) can stabilize the blind side, Mahomes will enjoy the split‑second “trust” and “timing” he referenced with reporters.
Conversely, continued turnover or miscommunication could resurrect last year’s sack totals and stall Kansas City’s bid for a fourth consecutive AFC crown.
As the Chiefs gear up to face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 5, the battle at the line of scrimmage will prove the season’s most critical subplot.
