The Toronto Raptors made one of the most shocking front office personnel decisions of the offseason, parting ways with longtime executive Masai Ujiri in June, one day following the NBA Draft. Ujiri joined the Raptors in 2013 after an impressive stint as General Manager of the Denver Nuggets.
Ujiri notably built the Raptors from the ground up, inheriting a 34-win team. Under Ujiri’s guidance, Toronto accumulated seven consecutive playoff births, including an NBA Championship in 2019. However, since the Raptors’ championship, they’ve made the playoffs twice and have recently endured two straight losing seasons.
The Raptors’ lack of success, coupled with questionable roster personnel decisions, ultimately led to the franchise parting with one of the better executives of the millennium. In lieu of Ujiri’s departure, Toronto has since promoted Bobby Webster from general manager to interim president of basketball operations.
Nonetheless, according to Sportsnets’ Michael Grange, the full-time role is Webster’s to lose. Thus, the Raptors are eyeing a new general manager to take over for the soon-to-be-promoted Webster. And according to Grange, among the list of candidates is Chicago Bulls’ very own Marc Eversley.
Bulls’ General Manager Marc Eversley is a name to watch for Toronto
Eversley began his professional career with the Raptors as assistant general manager from 2006 to 2013. Following his tenure with the Raptors, Eversley accepted a role as Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Washington Wizards. The Brampton, Ontario-native then joined the Bulls’ Front Office in 2020.
Eversley has worked hand-in-hand with Vice President of Basketball Operations Artūras Karnišovas in making basketball personnel decisions. While Chicago’s track record this decade is far from successful, Eversley’s experience and ties to Canadian basketball are vast.
Via Grange, the Bulls’ General Manager, “is a board member with Canadian Basketball and has a long-standing relationship with Webster and the experience to undertake some of the duties of a team president, even if Webster was president by title.”
Furthermore, Grange notes that Eversley was monumental in the Raptors’ decision to draft one of the organization’s most impactful players of all time—DeMar DeRozan. Aside from Eversley, the Raptors are reportedly eyeing former Head Coach Dwane Casey, former Sacramento Kings Executive Monte McNair, and longtime Indiana Pacers’ President Kevin Pritchard.
Of the names listed above, all are currently employed, but besides Eversley and Pritchard, a General Manager role with the Raptors would certainly be a promotion. However, there’s a chance Eversley aspires to his hometown to join an organization hellbent on winning.
