Mason Greenwood has reportedly taken the final steps to officially switch his international football allegiance from England to Jamaica.
The 23-year-old forward qualifies to play for the Reggae Boyz through his paternal grandparents. FIFA regulations permit players to make such a switch provided they’ve played fewer than four competitive senior matches for another country before turning 21. Greenwood made a single appearance for England—a Nations League game against Iceland in September 2020—when he came off the bench under Gareth Southgate. At that time, such an appearance would have locked him into the England setup permanently. However, just two weeks later, FIFA amended its rules, easing the restrictions on players in Greenwood’s situation.
The mandatory three-year waiting period for changing national teams expired in September 2023. Now, over a year later, reports suggest Greenwood has completed all the formalities to represent Jamaica at the international level.
England’s Football Association had reportedly made it clear that Greenwood would not be called up again following his suspension by Manchester United in January 2022 after allegations of rape surfaced. Though he was later charged with multiple offenses including attempted rape and assault, all charges were eventually dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service. Greenwood has maintained his innocence throughout.
After spending last season on loan at Getafe, Greenwood completed a permanent move to Marseille this summer. His decision to represent Jamaica now comes as he seeks to rebuild his career on both club and international fronts.
Interestingly, Greenwood may reconnect with a familiar face—former Manchester United assistant Steve McClaren, who was recently appointed Jamaica’s national team coach. McClaren mentioned speaking with Greenwood at Carrington before both parted ways with United, suggesting that a potential collaboration had already been in the works. Now, the two may look to make an impact together for Jamaica’s national side.
