The best part about Kansas City Chiefs training camp is that the offense and defense make each other better as they face one another every day during practice.
The Chiefs have no shortage of superstar players on both sides of the ball, which creates a high level of competition.
Following training camp practice on Wednesday, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was asked about the benefits of facing quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and it led him sharing a practice story about Mahomes and defensive tackle Chris Jones from a few years ago.
“I tell him (Jones) not to chase him (Mahomes) too much,” Spagnuolo said. “We got a special rule for Chris on that.”
Jones was next to speak to the media, and he further elaborated on what Spagnuolo was referencing to.
“I didn’t know he (Spagnuolo) was going to tell all my business,” Jones joked. “We have a rule in practice, once I cross the line of scrimmage and beat a player, I can’t chase Patrick. You know Patrick does some crazy stuff behind the line of scrimmage at times, and it gets very competitive out there. You can’t touch the quarterback, so the quarterback can hold the ball for like five or six seconds after the play. So, we was in a battle, and I had to show Pat that I can really catch [him]. I just chilled after I beat the guy because we got to stay 5-10 yards away from the quarterback. And it got serious one day, and he ended up pulling his groin. I was like, you know what Pat, you got it. Spags had a one-on-one with me, pulled me to the side.”
It’s common for teammates to grow tired of going up against each other, which is what make gamedays even more sweet.
However, it builds camaraderie and respect, which Jones and Mahomes have plenty for one another. The Chiefs have a ways to go before they go up against another team, with their first preseason game coming August 9 against the Arizona Cardinals.
