Mets reinstate Marte, recall Garza, activate Garcia

Mets activate Starling Marte from injured list | AP News

The revolving door that is the Mets’ 2025 active roster revolved again before Tuesday night’s game at Citi Field against the Angels. OF Starling Marte was reinstated after being placed on the 10-Day I.L. with a right knee bone bruise on July 8, RHP Justin Garza was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse, and RHP Rico Garcia was activated to the major league roster. In corresponding moves, INF Jared Young and RHP Kevin Herget were optioned to Syracuse, while RHP Chris Devenski was designated for assignment.

Marte has played a pivotal platoon role this season, with his .757 OPS against lefties ranking third among Mets with at least 100 PA (Jeff McNeil and Juan Soto are first and second, respectively). Garza, a 31-year-old whom the Mets acquired in June from the Giants, made four clean appearances before being barraged in Philadelphia for four runs in two innings on June 20. Garza hasn’t appeared in a game for the Mets since then. Garcia, meanwhile, was signed by the Mets this offseason, tossing two scoreless outings in the majors earlier this month before being selected off waivers by the Yankees. After just one appearance with the Bronx Bombers, Garcia was re-claimed yesterday by the Mets, swapping New York affiliations for the second time in as many weeks.

Like Garcia, Herget is on his second stint with the Mets this season after being selected off waivers by the Braves and later re-signing with the Amazins. Devenski was enjoying success in the majors, having allowed just three runs in 11.1 IP of work, which makes his DFA something of a surprise. Jared Young, the Mets’ Jesse Winker-lite this season, had just one PA since being recalled on July 11.

The Mets also placed Brandon Waddell on the 15-Day Injured List retroactive to July 19 with a right hip impingement. With the return of Brooks Raley, it’s unclear how much Waddell would have factored into the Mets’ plans this season if healthy.
