Don’t let anybody ever tell you something is impossible. There have been so many times throughout the history of basketball where somebody was told they were too small, too dumb, too thin, or not athletic enough. The list goes on. Yet there is boundless evidence of each criticism being proven wrong. One fundamental truth remains: ballers will ball. It didn’t take long for Chicago Bulls fans to recognize that Yuki Kawamura can ball. The young point guard was easily the team’s best player of the Summer League.
Now, the organization is rewarding that with a two-way contract. Kawamura seemed to put an exclamation point on everything with a stellar showing against Utah in Las Vegas, with 20 points and 10 assists, including six three-pointers. Everybody loves to reference how the Japanese native is 5’8 “and too small for the NBA. They continue ignoring evidence that it doesn’t seem to matter. The guy keeps making plays. You need to have players like that on your team. Good on the Bulls for being logical for once.

Retaining Kawamura creates intrigue on the Chicago Bulls depth chart.
Right now, they seem to have a significant logjam at point guard. They’re working to retain Josh Giddey, who should be their start this coming season and hopefully in the future. Then you have Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu. Keeping Kawamura increases the speculation that at least one of them will be traded before the season begins. Buzz has indicated Dosunmu is the hotter name at the moment, but both he and White are getting interest. Kawamura gives the Chicago Bulls some much-needed flexibility. They no longer have to worry about taking a serious depth hit if one of them gets dealt. It will be interesting to see how Billy Donovan decides to use Kawamura. He certainly has the ability to facilitate like Giddey, which is valuable in any offense.
