“Sensational” £50m striker now wants to join Spurs, he’d be their answer to Gyokeres

Tottenham Hotspur appear to be making a bold statement in the summer transfer market, signaling their intent to return to the top tier of English football under the guidance of new manager Thomas Frank. The Danish tactician, known for his impressive work at Brentford, has taken the reins at Spurs with a clear mandate: turn the club into genuine title contenders in the coming years. In support of this ambitious vision, the Tottenham board has opened the checkbook, greenlighting significant investment in new talent during Frank’s first transfer window at the helm.

The club has already made headlines by securing the £55 million signing of dynamic midfielder Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United—a major coup and a sign of intent from the North London outfit. Kudus’ arrival is just the beginning, as further high-profile signings are expected before the start of the 2025/26 campaign. Among those linked with a big-money move is Nottingham Forest playmaker Morgan Gibbs-White. Reports suggest that Spurs have activated the 24-year-old’s £60 million release clause, underlining their determination to bring in top-quality reinforcements.

However, despite that clause being triggered, Nottingham Forest have so far stood firm, refusing to sanction the transfer. This setback hasn’t deterred Spurs, who have since broadened their attacking shortlist as they look to strengthen their forward line. One of the more intriguing names resurfacing on Tottenham’s radar is Tyler Dibling. The teenage sensation from Southampton is being considered as a smart long-term investment, especially in light of the Saints’ relegation to the Championship. That said, Southampton are reportedly holding out for a £55 million fee to let the youngster leave—a steep price for a player with limited top-flight experience.

In addition to Dibling, another player attracting strong interest from Spurs is Brentford’s Yoane Wissa. According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, the 28-year-old forward is eager to reunite with Thomas Frank, under whom he enjoyed a prolific spell last season. Wissa found the back of the net 19 times in the Premier League during the 2024/25 campaign, showcasing his finishing prowess and tactical understanding of Frank’s system. The DR Congo international is said to favor a move to Tottenham over interest from Newcastle United, with a potential £50 million deal being discussed.

For Spurs, the appeal of Wissa goes beyond mere familiarity with their new head coach. In fact, he’s being viewed as a viable alternative to Viktor Gyökeres, the Sporting CP striker who has emerged as one of the most sought-after forwards in Europe this summer. Gyökeres was unstoppable last season, scoring a staggering 54 goals in just 52 appearances for the Portuguese giants and reaching an overall tally of 97 goals in 102 games since his arrival. The Swedish international has attracted strong interest from Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal, with the latter reportedly closing in on a £70 million move.

However, despite Gyökeres’ jaw-dropping numbers, some pundits have questioned whether he can replicate such form in the Premier League. That skepticism could work in Tottenham’s favor, as Wissa—already battle-tested in England’s top flight—offers a similar profile. Both forwards are adept at making runs off the shoulder of defenders and possess a sharp poacher’s instinct, but Wissa holds the edge in certain key metrics. He posted a superior goals-per-shot-on-target rate last season, suggesting he is more clinical when presented with opportunities.

Moreover, Wissa brings added value through his all-around play. He averaged more successful passes into the final third per 90 minutes than Gyökeres, while also maintaining a higher pass completion rate. This dual threat—goals and creativity—makes him an ideal forward in Frank’s fluid, high-pressing system. Surprisingly, despite being shorter than many traditional target men, Wissa also performed better in aerial duels, proving to be a more complete attacker than initially meets the eye.

Although £50 million might seem like a hefty investment for a player nearing 30, Wissa is arguably just entering his peak years. His proven Premier League experience, combined with his familiarity with Frank’s tactical blueprint, could make him an ideal fit at Tottenham. If he can replicate his Brentford form in a Spurs shirt, the deal could turn out to be a masterstroke—one that significantly boosts their attacking options and strengthens their push for silverware.

In summary, Tottenham’s transfer activity this summer reflects a club aiming to shake off years of underachievement and reposition itself among England’s elite. Backed by an ambitious board and led by a manager with a clear tactical vision, the Lilywhites are laying the foundations for a new era. With potential signings like Wissa offering both immediate impact and long-term value, Spurs may finally be assembling a squad capable of challenging for domestic honors and competing on the biggest European stages once again.
