Report: World Series champ cleared for MLB comeback after domestic violence suspension

Former Dodgers star Julio Urías reinstated from MLB's domestic violence suspension

Former Los Angeles Dodgers star pitcher Julio Urías is seeking a return to MLB after he was reinstated Thursday for violating the league’s policy on domestic violence and sexual assault.

Urías, the only player suspended twice under MLB’s domestic violence and sexual assault policy, last played in MLB for the Dodgers on Sept. 1, 2023.

“He still has every intention to continue his career,” Urías’ agent, Scott Boras, told the Los Angeles Times. “He’s getting in shape. Obviously, he’ll have options that are open to him.”

Urías was arrested on Sept. 3, 2023, on suspicion of felony domestic violence after witness video showed him throwing his wife into a fence outside BMO Stadium in Los Angeles and taking a swing at her while bystanders tried to intervene.

He was placed on administrative leave by MLB for the final month of the 2023 season and became a free agent after his contract expired with the Dodgers.

He did not pitch in MLB in 2024.

Following his arrest, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office determined “neither the victim’s injuries nor the defendant’s criminal history justify a felony filing,” according to The Times.

However, the city attorney’s office filed five misdemeanor charges against Urías, including one count of spousal battery, two counts of domestic battery involving dating relationship, one count of assault and one count of false imprisonment.

He pleaded no contest to one count of domestic battery and the other four charges were dropped after he agreed to enter a yearlong domestic violence treatment program.

Urías was also arrested in 2019 for an incident in which witnesses said he pushed his then-fiancee, but she said she fell.

No charges were filed, but he did agree to complete a similar domestic violence treatment program that year and was suspended for 20 games by MLB.

In March, MLB suspended Urías for his 2023 domestic violence incident through the end of the 2025 All-Star break, which runs through Thursday.

Urías, a 28-year-old lefty pitcher who recorded the final out of the Dodgers’ World Series championship in 2020, is now seeking a second chance in MLB. It is believed multiple MLB teams have checked in on Urías, according to The Times, but it remains unclear when, where or if he might sign with a team.

“It depends on how teams view the situation and view his skill,” Boras said.

Urías, a native of Culiacan, Mexico, made his MLB debut for the Dodgers at age 19 in 2016. In eight MLB seasons with the Dodgers, he has a 60-25 record, 3.11 ERA and 710 strikeouts in 717 innings pitched in 158 games, including 122 starts.

The trumpeter who scores the postgame scurry to the 7 on Mets Plaza made an interesting musical choice in the minutes following the fresh 5-1 loss the Marlins had inflicted upon the Mets inside Citi Field.
