The Kansas City Chiefs rallied behind their stellar defense to make three straight trips to the Super Bowl and won two of those.

Now, with training camp around the corner, the Chiefs are trying to keep the team together for the long run.

The Chiefs recently gave guard Trey Smith a four-year, $94 million extension, and it’s now time to address the defense.

According to ESPN insider Nate Taylor, the Chiefs are focused on giving defensive back Trent McDuffie a contract extension.

“Based on Sauce Gardner’s deal (with the New York Jets), the Chiefs will now shift their focus to All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, who you could argue has been the more productive player. Can they get a deal done with Trent McDuffie before training camp, before the regular season starts?” Taylor said, via Chiefs Blitz.

The Jets recently signed Gardner to a four-year extension worth $120.4 million to make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

That makes McDuffie the next in line to get a deal.

The Chiefs selected McDuffie in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and it didn’t take long before he established himself as one of the best young cornerbacks in the game.

With Gardner, Derek Stingley and Jaycee Horn all making at least $25 million a year, McDuffie is set for a big payday.

In three seasons, he has 183 combined tackles, 27 passes defended, seven forced fumbles and two interceptions in 43 games.

He’s earned whatever is coming his way, and watching how the cornerback market has exploded, the Chiefs will be wise to sign him before he becomes even more expensive.
