Eugenio Suarez hits a 2 RBI home run against the Colorado Rockies.
The New York Yankees can be as active as they want to be at the trade deadline, but the harsh reality is that they need multiple teams to sell. If the Yankees don’t get good news from other teams around the league, they’ll find themselves in a strange position.
When recently discussing what the Yankees could do, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic spoke about what Brian Cashman is attempting to accomplish.
However, when speaking about Eugenio Suarez, the Yankees’ top Target, he noted that many other teams around the league will be interested in the big right-handed slugger.
“Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has said he’s going to go to town,” Rosenthal said on FOX Sports. “Well, he’s going to need to visit a lot of different villages because they have multiple needs. Third base, a ton of speculation about Eugenio Suarez from the Diamondbacks. The Yankees aren’t the only team who will be after him.”
For the Yankees, this obviously isn’t ideal, but it’s something they already understood. He’s arguably the top player on the market, and unless something goes wrong over the next few weeks, he’s expected to have a huge following of other teams around the league.
Suarez Addresses Trade Rumors
Suarez recently addressed the rumors surrounding him and the New York Yankees.
Typically, players don’t speak directly about teams, especially when they’re under contract with another squad, but the expectation around the league is for the Arizona Diamondbacks to move him.
When asked exactly about the potential of joining the Yankees, Suarez admitted that he’d be open to playing for them, as the team has always looked to win a World Series.
“It’s a team that wants to win.” Suarez shared with reporters at the All-Star Game. “They’re hungry still. If I got over there, I would do my best and try to help them win the World Series.”
Yankees’ Trade Deadline Outlook
Brian Cashman will have a tough trade deadline to put together the best possible roster.
Prior to the All-Star break, the New York Yankees didn’t exactly play great baseball, losing their first-place spot in the American League East.
While the Yankees have struggled for about a month now, it was a telling sign leading up to the deadline.
“I definitely will look to see if I can find a (starting pitcher), despite getting some real quality starts from others who have stepped up,” Cashman told reporters, including The Athletic . “Certainly, you would love to import a starter, some relievers, because our bullpen has obviously been taxed and some injuries. And, yeah, an infielder as well, if possible.
“But that’s a long list, and I’m not sure this will be a deep deadline or not. So I don’t know how active we can be. But we will try to be active.”
While the Yankees’ recent play is somewhat concerning, it’s also crucial that Cashman understands what he needs to look for now.
It was already guaranteed that the Yankees needed a third baseman and another arm or two, but those issues are much more prevalent now than they were a few weeks ago, despite how poorly the positions have played recently.
The Yankees got rid of DJ LeMahieu, which should be a telling sign of what’s to come at the position.
