Behind the Lens: A Look Back at the Top Photos from the 2024 Season – No. 6

Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones (95) runs onto the field prior to the Week 14 NFL game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, December 8, 2024.

A photograph can be powerful. It possesses the ability to capture the raw emotion of a singular moment and preserve an otherwise fleeting snippet of time, all while telling a story in the process.

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to take a look back at 10 of the best photos from the 2024-25 season along with commentary from Chiefs’ Director of Photography Steve Sanders.

Here’s what we’ve covered so far:

We’ll continue with No. 6:

“Sack Nation in the House”

Setting: Week 14 vs. Los Angeles

The Subject: Defensive tackle Chris Jones runs out of the tunnel during pre-game introductions.

Taken By: Andrew Mather

Camera Model: Cannon EOS R3

Focal Length: 22 mm

Exposure Time: 1/400

Aperture: f/2.8

Steve Sanders’ Thoughts:

Q: What was going on here, and why did you include this photo in the collection?

Sanders: “We were really excited to have something different in the stadium going on for pre-game introductions mid-season, and that meant we had to adapt. It was pretty dark, there was heavy fog, and the fans had the cell phone lights on in the stands,” Sanders said. “In this one, you see Chris emerging from the fog with his hand to his ear. It’s just a fun picture. It has a nice color tone to it, and it’s so much different than what we’ve been able to get in past seasons.”

Q: Can you speak to how this photo is framed? It worked out so well with the ribbon board.

Sanders: “One of the things that I really liked about this was how the ’95’ was repeating on the ribbon board, and the third repetition of that was right into Chris’ chest. It almost lines up perfectly,” Sanders said. “I think we really took advantage of the right-side third, and it just allows for the viewer to follow from the left side to the subject.”

Q: How difficult is it to navigate the fog? Could it have worked out any better here?

Sanders: “We lose a lot of frames where the smoke just overpowers the subject, but the way the wind worked out that night, it was perfect,” Sanders said. “Chris moved right into the open spot, too, so we got a little bit lucky there.”

Q: Andrew shoots a lot of concerts. Do you think that experience helped him here?

Sanders: “I do. He shoots in this kind of mixed lighting a lot,” Sanders said. “He did a great job with this.”
