Breaking news: Milwaukee Brewers Trade For Speedy Dodgers Outfielder

Prior to the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers series finale on Wednesday, July 9, the two organizations made a trade. After being designated for assignment by LA earlier in the week, outfielder Steward Berroa was traded to the Brew Crew for cash. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, Elvin Rodriguez was DFA’d by Milwaukee.

Berrora was a long time member and prospect in the Toronto Blue Jays system, signing with them as an International free agent in 2016 out of the Dominican Republic. He made his MLB debut in 2024, but accumulated just 37 at-bats. Earlier this year, Beorra was squeezed off the Blue Jays 40-man roster and picked up by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

With Los Angeles, Berrora never made a big league appearance and was actually placed on the injured list with shoulder bursitis prior to being DFA’d by the Dodgers. However, the speedy outfielder has a solid floor of being a defensive replacement or pinch runner. In the minor leagues, he has stolen anywhere from 34-58 bases each year since 2021 and already has 20 in 2025.

Adding Berrora is by no means a splashy move, but players who have significant speed like him tend to find their way onto playoff rosters each year given the value they provide on the bases and defensively. Berrora will join Drew Avans and Blake Perkins in the minor leagues as depth options for the team, however, as mentioned Berrora is injured and Perkins is currently on rehab assignment following a broken shin sustained during spring training.
