Chiefs Urged To Sign Veteran Competition for Camp

The Kansas City Chiefs have been urged to add some competition ahead of training camp.

When the Kansas City Chiefs step foot on the field to begin training camp, the offensive line will be one of the most fascinating groups to watch.

Jaylon Moore and Josh Simmons to battle at left tackle, while Kingsley Suamataia has shifted inside to guard to replace the departed Joe Thuney. How the left side of the line fares against Steve Spagnuolo’s defense will tell us a lot about what we can expect.

But those are the starters, what about who is behind them?

For CBS Sports, adding some guard competition is the biggest thing the franchise must do as training camp edges closer.

“Kansas City has added some competition along its offensive line by signing Jaylon Moore and drafting Josh Simmons after trading away Joe Thuney,” CBS Sports writes. “The left guard spot vacated by Thuney is currently filled by Kingsley Suamataia. At the very least, the Chiefs should add competition in that role.”

As the roster currently stands, Mike Caliendo is the backup left guard, with undrafted rookie Dalton Cooper behind him, and behind Trey Smith is C.J. Hanson, who was a seventh-round pick in 2024.

That’s it, and that isn’t ideal because the Chiefs’ line is one injury away from being in serious strife. Could the Chiefs look to add a veteran presence like free agents Will Hernandez or Shaq Mason?

Sure, but the coaching staff likely wants to see what they have from the group first before making any moves, which is what most NFL teams do too.

So while the starters along the offensive line have question marks, so too do the backups, and for a team hoping to go deep into the postseason, that isn’t a great spot to be.
